Front doors, sliding glass doors and all other exterior door installations require some degree of expertise to be done correctly. Improperly installed exterior doors are less energy efficient, may be less secure, may not function correctly and can cause problems with moisture and mold. The easiest way to replace a front door is to install a new pre-hung door or door system. Before installation can begin, however, the doorway must be prepared.

Prepare for Front Door Installation

The first steps in installing a new pre-hung front door is to remove the old front door and doorjamb. To remove the old door, tap the hinge pins out of the hinges. If the pins won't come out, unscrew the jamb side of the hinges and remove them with the door.

Next, the molding should be removed. This can be done by scoring beneath the molding with a utility knife and prying it away from the interior wall using a pry bar. If the molding is going to be reused, care should be taken during this step. With the molding removed, the jamb is fully exposed. Use a circular saw to cut the jamb in half and pry it out of the door opening. The opening is now ready for professional installation.
