A door installation project can be very straightforward or very complex, depending on the type of door being installed. Pre-hung doors that fit precisely into an established doorway can be installed easily by most do-it-yourselfers. If a doorway needs to be resized or restructured or if a door system is to be used, the project can become much more complicated. Hiring a professional contractor is the best way to ensure that doors are installed properly and functioning correctly.

Pre-Hung Replacement Door Installation

Pre-hung replacement doors require few tools and minimal time to install. They arrive fully assembled, with the door fixed on the frame. To install, separate the door (or doors for French doors) from the frame by taking the pins out of the hinges. Then, place the frame in the door opening. Because openings are not always square, it's necessary to level out the frame by inserting wood shims between the jambs and the studs. Tack the frame in place with finishing nails on the hinge side of the jamb.

Once the frame is plumb and straight, reconnect the door to the frame by inserting the pins back in the hinges. Add more wood shims as needed to level and plumb the door assembly. Use finishing nails (or screws) on both sides of the jamb to secure the frame in place. Exterior doors require insulation and caulking.
