There are several glass types for homeowners to choose from when they're considering window pane replacement.

Types of Replacement Window Panes

The first, most basic pane type is clear glass. While clear glass was used for years to cover the openings in houses, technological advances have improved clear glass glazing. These new glazes have enabled decreased condensation, solar absorption and air loss.

Low-emissivity (low-E) replacement panes are coated with a special film that reflects solar heat and reduces heat transfer into the home. While the homeowner gets the full benefit of light through the glass, low-E windows resist 40 to 70 percent of the sun's heat.

Heat-absorbing glass contains tints that alter the color of the glass, allowing solar heat to be absorbed by the window rather than allowing it to pass into the house. In hot climates, however, the intense heat passes through the heat-absorbing glass by conduction, so these windows are not always effective in cooling a home.

Reflective glass is coated with a special film that reduces heat absorption and light transmittance. Houseplant lovers, however, may find that plants struggle with this decreasing presence of solar light.
