Typically used to better insulate single-hung, double-hung and sliding glass windows, storm windows are available in many styles and prices. Storm window configurations include double-track, triple-track or basement styles, depending on the homeowner's preference.
In double-track styles, the screen and the outer pane are stationary, resting on the outermost track. The inside pane is designed to move freely along its own track, allowing fresh air into a room. Triple-track styles are constructed so that each sash and the screen move within their own, separate tracks. This design gives residents the flexibility of opening the window completely--without the use of the screen. It also allows for improved circulation when a homeowner moves both sashes to the bottom of the window, leaving the screen open at the top to remove hot air that hovers near the ceiling. Storm products are also available in sliders, where the panes move the same way along a horizontal plane rather than a vertical plane.
In a basement-style storm product, there is only one pane, and it remains stationary. The pane is held in place by latches along the side, top and bottom of the opening, and is removable during mild weather. Some basement storm products also come with mountable screens to keep the bugs out when the glass is removed.
